What do you think is your biggest Advantage and your biggest Disadvantage about being an Indie artist?
One Of My Biggest Advantages of being a Indie artist would definitely have to be the capability to freely create something one day and release it whenever I want. I feel like with many industry artist they don’t have the liberty once they’re signed and I honestly love having the opportunity to do so. A disadvantage would be not having a team to market and promote your product. There is a joy that comes when promoting your work when solo, but sometimes it becomes a chore or a hassle when you can’t 100% invest into it the way you’d like to.
If you wasn't in the music business or industry, what do you think you would be doing with your life instead?
If I wasn’t in the music industry I respectably wouldn’t know what else I’d be happy with. Like, everyone has their own plan B’s, which I do too myself, but I wouldn’t really be fond of it. But if I was to be in that predicament, I’d be working in the medical field. I was really into science growing up and was into learning about the body’s anatomy and functions. Anything with the heart or brain I was very curious into venturing.
What would you consider your most successful or proudest moment in your music career, so far?
Hmm, I would say, when I first entered my Drill era at the time it became hot in New York City. I was doing drill aka Grime when I was like 14 but it was never something I took so seriously and that genre wasn’t really popping around that time. Until the year of 2019 I posted a triller of a Drill Diss Track I made towards another rapper I was beefing with at the time. It was a huge hit. I got a big reaction out of it and that’s exactly what I wanted. It fueled something in me and made me gain a larger audience and eventually my skill was noticed and Co-signed by Pop Smoke.
Out of all the songs you've released, what do you think is your Best song and why?
I honestly cannot pick one song being that I have such a variety. But if I was to choose a Recent Favorite .. it would have to be “My H’s & U”. I wrote this song after a bad breakup and felt like my alter ego of Ashanii had to come out. I was very invested into that relationship and felt like I was done wrong when I literally can be exactly the person in the song. The player type who can love you and love the thrill of having multiple partners aswell and not get caught up. The song is also very catchy and the story that is told is very visual.
Are you able to make a living with your music? If so, how were you able to attain a career doing what you love? If not, what do you do in order to fund your music career? What advice would give to someone who's interested in pursuing a career in music?
If I’m being completely honest, I am not making a living out of my music. What I do to fund my music career is HUSTLE. I will work any job when it comes to paying something I need off. Whether it’s a small job or a quick gig I’ll take it. Money is money to me. But I’m also working on having a stable salary job to pay it off before my career pays me. And advice I’d give to a artist is to be yourself and don’t follow the trend. People can easily get lost in what’s hot and end up not standing out like they should. Tryna make a certain genre that’s hot already thinking you’ll stand out really doesn’t work. You gotta be the odd one out but still make it saucy that people wanna run it back.
What is the story behind your band name/stage name?
The story behind my name is actually so basic it’s funny.. One day when I was like 15 I was writing my Government name over and over again on a piece of paper.. and I was wondering how it would be to remove a few letters and then add some. Which then came out to Ashanii. Which evidently I only used as my street name. If anyone asked me what my name was and they weren’t a coworker or a classmate it was Ashanii. Till everyone I knew started calling me that. It then became like a Alter ego for me. I originally had a few rap names like “Lady Menace” or “Foreign Bandz” till I just decided Ashanii was another me and I ran with it because Ashanii can Sing and she can Rap. Just felt like that had to be my name.
What is your latest release and where fans can find it?
I just Dropped a Freestyle for my birthday that just passed called “IAmShe” on SoundCloud and it will also be posted on all platforms very soon. You can find me on ITunes, Spotify, YouTube and more.
What is on your agenda or what can fans expect to see from you in 2023?
my agenda is to stay consistent and solid through the game. I tend to let my emotions parlay into my business and I need to learn to not mix the two unless it’s to use my emotions as a muse. I’ll be dropping more singles and more visuals aswell as other content such as vlogs and interviews maybe even some secret events like merch and podcasts! So stay tuned because it’s only going to get more exciting.
